CARIOLA ON THE MOVE
Staying true to one of our core values, prioritizing quality, Mary Cariola Center has made an exciting decision with respect to our school campuses. Mary Cariola Center School has secured a new campus, located at St. Thomas More on East Avenue. We will occupy the school building previously enjoyed by Siena Academy, and currently utilized by Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women. We will be vacating one of our three school buildings on the East Henrietta Campus, while retaining our existing footprint on the Elmwood Campus.

The St. Thomas More community has welcomed us to their campus as we have negotiated a lease agreement that will keep us in their facility for at least the next four years and possibly beyond. This move is mutually beneficial, as Mary Cariola Center will have an additional single-story school facility that allows for easy access and learning for all our students. To ensure the safety of all our students and staff, planning is currently underway for necessary building modifications in classrooms, therapy spaces and common areas.

Rest assured, we will continue to maintain our strong educational curriculum, specialized therapies and family services under the direction of a Principal and Vice-Principal at all campus locations.

This exciting move included considerable evaluation from Mary Cariola’s Leadership Team and Board of Directors. We are confident that this decision will benefit those we serve. We anticipate a September opening of "Cariola on East.”

FOUNDATION GRANTS IMPACT AGENCY
Many charitable foundations have provided Mary Cariola Center with much-needed funds due to the global pandemic. As an Agency and on behalf of our community, we thank all of them so very much.  Two of those foundations recently awarded extremely generous grants to Mary Cariola Center.
The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation, headquartered in New York City, provides grants exclusively in New York State. The Foundation approved a grant application to Mary Cariola Center for $81,660 for the project “Eliminating Language Barriers.” This grant bridged the communication gap between non-English speaking or deaf parents/caregivers and Cariola staff, and was critical for virtual learning and therapy sessions.
In response to the pandemic, the Farash Foundation created the “Farash Community COVID Fund” to provide unrestricted support to organizations that serve the Foundation’s key mission areas of education, arts and culture, entrepreneurship, and workforce development. This $165,000 grant allowed Mary Cariola Center to build up the internal capacity and resources needed to combat the crisis and deliver services that so many people count on.
“The Foundation’s support was immediate and flexible, allowing us to make a significant difference in the lives of those we serve,” said Karen Zandi, President/CEO of Mary Cariola Center.
The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation and the Farash Foundation have the gratitude of over 500 families Mary Cariola Center serves and the nearly 700 people employed by Mary Cariola.
“These grants provided much-needed resources, including IT support and PPE, to keep our vulnerable population safe throughout the pandemic,” Zandi said.
The Cariola Community appreciates all of the foundations that provide us with much-needed funding to ensure each child and youth with complex disabilities can reach their full potential. We could not do what we do without them.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: THE ANDERSON-DUBOSE COMPANY
You might not be familiar with their name, but if you have ever been at a traffic signal next to one of those large tractor-trailers featuring mouthwatering cheeseburgers, oversized french fries and the McDonalds logo, you’ve seen The Anderson-DuBose Company in action.
The paper products and food distribution company prides itself on community involvement and philanthropy. In 2014, the company established the AD Charity Committee to allow associates to donate to charities in our community to improve the lives of children and families in need.
Through their Associates Giving program, the Anderson-DuBose team has donated over $40,000 to Mary Cariola! These funds have helped us provide a variety of items to our students, such as specialized equipment for walking as well as technology devices that give our non-verbal students a voice. A team from Anderson-DuBose also designed and built accessible garden planters for students to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers as part of their classroom learning.
We are so grateful to The Anderson-DuBose Company and their associates for believing in our mission to transform the lives of individuals with disabilities.

MASCOT CHALLENGE FOR MARY CARIOLA FANS

We know that our community always roots for Mary Cariola Center—so we decided to make it official!

After reviewing countless archives, we have discovered that Mary Cariola has never had a team name or mascot. We’re about to change that this year.

Help us choose a team name and mascot that embody the spirit and embrace the core values of the Agency. Once the team name and mascot are selected, athletic apparel will be designed and available for purchase. When our students and residents participate in Special Olympics or other activities, they will be wearing official Mary Cariola team uniforms. Our team mascot will also appear at Agency sponsored events.

Share your team spirit ideas by taking a quick and easy survey!  The grand prize winner will receive a Cariola athletic apparel package (shirt and jacket) made with the new team name. The top three runners-up will receive a t-shirt sporting our new team name.  We can’t wait to start cheering, so complete your survey by June 1.
