Will you help us raise $150,000 to support our students and residents? Our largest community fundraising event, Walking on Sunshine, is September 18 at Veterans Memorial Park in Penfield. You’ll enjoy a scenic Sunday walk, family activities, a raffle, live music, The Happy Pirates Show, a celebration lunch and much more. Your gift to Mary Cariola Center will support a variety of classroom initiatives, our preschool evaluation program and adaptive equipment workshop, and enhance residential activities. | | | | BAILEY BOYZ ARE HAPPY CAMPERS! | | There is a good chance that our Bailey Road resident Nate is already counting the days for their 2023 camping vacation. It’s that much fun! For the past 15 years, residents at Bailey Road, better known as the Bailey Boyz, have created fond summer memories with their annual camping trip. In August, four of the residents Nate, Ty, Jason and Canii, enjoyed a 3-day/2-night camping vacation at Jellystone Park in Java, N.Y. where they enjoyed swimming, driving golf carts, fishing, bingo, and a host of additional activities. Other Bailey residents opted for a day at Seabreeze Amusement Park. A seasoned and veteran team of Bailey Road staff attend camp and help with packing, set up, cooking (steaks and potato salad are a long-standing tradition), ensuring daily routines are followed (hygiene and medications administered), and developing a backup plan to ensure everyone has fun. The residents also have responsibilities to create summer memories. “We have no rules at camp—we’re on vacation,” explains Bailey Road Residential Manager Moe Chaffer. “A lot of our residents don’t have memories from growing up. It’s important to make traditions. Years from now, I want them to look back on this experience.” Thanks to the family of Bailey Road staffer Phil Heiler (who passed away suddenly in 2013), the camping trip has long received proceeds from fundraising events sponsored by the Heiler family. Additional funds are received from residents’ families and friends. If you would like to support the Bailey Boyz Camping Trip 2023, donations can be designated to the Bailey Camp Fund. | | | | | | COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING EVENTS MAKE BIG IMPACT | | Two community fundraising events over the span of three days will make a significant impact for Mary Cariola Center. A BIG Thank You…to all of those who attended the Rochester Charity Cup and the Caring for a Cause Golf Classic! Hockey Buddies hosted the inaugural Rochester Charity Cup on August 13. It focused on raising funds to cover the youth hockey league fees for underprivileged boys and girls, while also supporting Mary Cariola's mission of transforming the lives of individuals with disabilities. A crowd of about 250 enjoyed the event that featured former NHL players and local hockey standouts and included family fun activities, a silent auction and a raffle. Sharon Haney and Mike Haney hosted the 8th Annual Caring for a Cause Golf Classic on August 15 at Ridgemont Country Club. The classic featured 160 golfers and was supported by numerous local businesses and corporations. The event honors the memory of beloved Mary Cariola student Todd Quist. Since its inception, this event has raised more than $200,000 for Cariola programs and initiatives not covered by other revenue streams. In attendance were Leadership and Sunrise Circle donors, Corporate Partners and event sponsors, as well as Board members and guests. The presenting sponsor for the evening was Corporate Partner LeChase Construction, with its president, Will Mack, serving as the night’s host. | | | | | After a nearly three-year hiatus due to COVID, it was wonderful to be able to bring so many of our supporters together again. And what a special evening it was!...from $10,000 for a glass of water to a room full of Be Mary! paddles in the air, the event surpassed all our expectations raising over $246,000 for much-needed renovations and improvements in our six residential homes. These are much-needed projects that will make each home as comfortable, safe, and functional as possible for the residents and staff. Check out our photo gallery from the event. Combined with other donations and a $250,000 grant commitment that Assemblymember Harry Bronson helped secure from the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York back in April, we have now raised more than $500,000 toward this initiative to support our residences. A big THANK YOU to everyone who has joined in this special effort! | | | | | | | | EAST AVENUE CAMPUS OPENS TO FULL CAPACITY | | | | When students at our East Avenue campus arrive next Wednesday on the first day of school, they will be greeted by a beautiful newly remodeled and improved school campus. Thanks to the generosity of a small group of donors, all the remodeling work is completed and ready to accept “new to this campus” students. The former St. Thomas More school is the newest home for Mary Cariola students. Half of the school was remodeled last year, and the remaining sections have been completed for the 2022-23 school year. Featuring a colorful nursing suite, therapy rooms and large classrooms, the school is truly a welcoming sight for students, families, and staff. Our East Avenue campus now features 14 classrooms with capacity for 99 students. The opening of the entire facility has allowed Cariola to shift students and close one building on the East Henrietta campus, the former St. Anne’s School. The completion of the East Avenue remodel has been long anticipated and will provide students and staff an engaging environment for learning, therapy, and care. | | A CARIOLA "BRIGHT SPOT" - MEET SUNNY! | | | | | Introducing Sunny, our new school and agency mascot. Sunny came to life after an exceptionally long journey on a cargo ship that was stranded on the docks in Los Angeles for several months. Students, residents, and staff alike are thrilled that Sunny is finally here. Sunny’s bright, happy personality has already brought numerous smiles to the Cariola Community, appearing at a staff event at Frontier Field, posing for photos for an upcoming marketing project, and has a busy schedule ahead. | | | | Sunny’s favorite drink is Sunny Delight orange juice, and favorite food is of course “sun chips”. You can meet Sunny at our upcoming Walking on Sunshine event on September 18 and watch for future appearances in school and in our residences. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620 | | | | |
