Support Walking on Sunshine!
Celebrate the last Sunday of the summer by taking a leisurely walk with family and friends, all to benefit the Mary Cariola Center. Join us for our 15th Annual Walking on Sunshine event on Sunday, September 17 beginning at 9:30 AM. It’s Mary Cariola’s largest community fundraiser, and we hope to raise $150,000 or more for our students, residents and staff. Support of this event provides:
  • Funding for our Adaptive Equipment Workshop
  • Social Workers for our students’ families
  • Specialized equipment for clinical, classroom, and residential use
  • Additional community service programs and opportunities.
For all these reasons and more…join the fun! Enjoy family activities, live music, lunch, our infamous raffle, team mascots and much more.

Rally your team or fundraise individually for a chance to win! Top individual fundraisers will win a gift certificate to the Cariola store to purchase some Mary Cariola Swag! Top teams will win Wegmans gift cards, and the Team Captain will also receive a gift certificate to the Cariola store. The top three winners will be announced at the Walk, and prizes will be distributed the following week.

Cariola Donors Come Through Again

If there is one thing that our founder Mary Cariola was known for, it was innovation. Her vision and forward thinking are the bedrock of the Agency she built. Her innovative drive and mission have never been more evident than at the 2023 Eat, Drink & Be Mary fundraiser.

Nearly 150 leadership donors and their guests gathered at Casa Larga Vineyards to learn (and donate!) about the need for innovative programs and day habilitation opportunities for Cariola alumni and residents over age 21 – this includes Cariola alumni with no day program options as well as our residents who are in current need of these services.

"What we have found is that many times our graduates and individuals living with us are excluded from Day Program services because of their high level of individualized needs,” said Mary Cariola School Superintendent Dr. Christine Sheffer.
Referencing the spirit and tenacity of Mary Cariola, Agency President Karen Zandi said, “We have to create what doesn’t exist.”
More than $170,000 was raised in support of these new initiatives which include the concept of a Day Habilitation Program attached to an on-site clinic as well as a short-term residential program with classrooms. Programs will be rolled out in phases with a target date to be determined in the near future.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special evening and generously supported this new endeavor.  Learn more about this initiative HERE

NIH/URMC/Cariola COVID Study Ends

The National Institute of Health, URMC, Cariola COVID Study is wrapping up data collection and COVID-19 testing at Mary Cariola Center Schools. Since May 2021, the study provided accessible and flexible COVID-19 PCR testing for enrolled staff and students. During this time, the study’s goal was to understand the short- and long-term effects of COVID-19 on the intellectual and developmental disability population.  A shared goal between the study and Mary Cariola Schools was to keep staff and students safe and school open.
Music Therapist Karen Skahill is one of the original study participants. “I joined the COVID study to protect myself and the Mary Cariola community,” Karen said. “The weekly tests gave me peace of mind that I was safe, and I was keeping the students safe during a scary and uncertain time. I would say that I’ve had over 100 nasal swabs.”
The study will share its final findings with the Cariola community this fall.
Thank you to all families, students and staff who participated in the study! Your commitment and engagement are appreciated and recognized by the study team.
Mary Cariola is featured in URMC’s summer newsletter! READ more about this study that formed an unlikely team that navigated a pandemic in real-time to keep some of the most vulnerable students to the virus safe, staff healthy and schools open.
