See what happens when a community comes together, to support our 450 students and residents—with heart, with purpose, and unstoppable energy.

It all started 25 years ago—with a foundation of generosity, grit, and heart. Since then, the Nichols Construction Team has built more than structures—they have built a transformative partnership with Mary Cariola Center. Through leadership, hands-on support, and unwavering dedication, they’ve helped shape our residences and schools.

Their contributions include:

  • Donating land, constructing and then expanding our Bailey Road home
  • Facilitating the donation of land and constructing the East River Road residence
  • Retrofitting our East Avenue Campus High School
  • Planning the upcoming Rushwood expansion
  • Hosting our 75th Anniversary celebration, Party Like It’s 1949

Last month, they raised the roof on their commitment by selecting Mary Cariola as their charity of choice. To kick off our largest community fundraiser, Walking on Sunshine, they hosted a rally and matched every dollar donated up to $5,000.

What followed was extraordinary. They surpassed their $12,500 goal, then raised the bar again... and again. In total, the Nichols Team and their generous partners raised over $40,000 for Mary Cariola.

Their impact isn’t just measured in dollars. It’s etched into every doorway they have built, every classroom they have modified, and every life they’ve helped lift.

The Nichols Team’s commitment goes beyond the job site—it is reflected in the lasting impact they have made on our programs, our spaces, and the people who rely on them. We are deeply grateful for their friendship and generosity.

This year marks 10 years of volunteering—and 5 years as Activities Coordinator—for one of Mary Cariola’s most passionate Walking on Sunshine Committee members.

Occupational Therapy Supervisor Daniele Loomis Rostan first attended Walking on Sunshine 11 years ago as a new employee.  As a mom of children with disabilities, it was the first community event her whole family could enjoy together without feeling out of place. “Everyone was so welcoming and accepting. It was a really special moment for us,” Daniele said.

Inspired to give back, Daniele signed up to be a Walking on Sunshine volunteer in the Activities Tent the following year—and never looked back.

Today, she leads a team of volunteers who make sure every activity is fun, inclusive, and accessible. “It brings me so much joy to see kids of all abilities just being kids—having fun, trying new things, and sharing experiences.”, Daniele said.

Thanks to Daniele's dedication, the Activities Tent remains one of the most joyful and inclusive parts of the day. Her energy, passion, and commitment continue to shape the heart of the walk and thanks to her leadership, the Activities Tent is more than just fun—it’s a space where every individual is seen, celebrated, and included.

There’s no drama in our relationship with the Alfred State Drama Club—just over a decade of unwavering support, heart, and community spirit.

Since Fall 2013, the Alfred State Drama Club has proudly selected Mary Cariola Center as its philanthropic cause. That semester marked their debut at our Walking on Sunshine event—and to our knowledge, they have not missed a single walk since.

Every September, they make the 90-minute drive to Rochester to walk alongside us.  Even during the pandemic, they showed up—virtually—by walking around the Alfred State campus to keep the tradition alive.

What began with the Drama Club has grown into a full Performing Arts movement, now including Alfred State Voices, Instrumental Music, and Rock Band. Together, these enthusiastic students have raised nearly $12,000 for Mary Cariola Center—and their impact continues to grow.

While many student-led philanthropic efforts fade as members graduate, this one has stood the test of time.

“Walking on Sunshine” has become more than an event—it’s a tradition, a team-building experience, and a way for Alfred State students and alumni to give back to a cause they believe in.

"As someone who's been part of this journey since the beginning, I'm incredibly proud of what we've accomplished," said Tyler Ribble, Drama Club Member and now Alfred State Drama Club Advisor and Director of Finance & Operations, Student Senate. "Every year, we look forward to joining the walk, bonding as a group, and supporting an organization that continues to inspire us."

Here’s to many more years of music, movement, and meaningful impact—punctuated with a few well-earned jazz hands along the way.
